Baba Ziauddin Siddique (September 13, 1958 – October 12, 2024) was an Indian politician from Maharashtra. He represented the Bandra West constituency as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for three terms in 1999, 2004, and 2009. Between 2004 and 2008, he served as Minister of State for Food Civil Supplies (FDA) and Labor under Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Earlier in his career, Siddique served as a Municipal Corporator for two terms from 1992 to 1997. Before he passed away, he held the roles of Chairperson and Senior Vice President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee and was a member of the Parliamentary Board of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. On February 8, 2024, he resigned from the Indian National Congress and joined the Nationalist Congress Party, led by Ajit Pawar, just a few days later on February 12, 2024. On October 12, 2024, Baba Siddique was tragically shot and killed outside his son Zeeshan’s office. Political Career Baba Siddique, also known as Ziauddin Siddique, joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1977 as a young man. He was actively involved in student movements through the National Students Union of India, the student wing of the INC. By 1980, he was the General Secretary of the Bandra Youth Congress and became its president by 1982. In 1988, he was elected as the president of the Mumbai Youth Congress. In 1992, Siddique became a Municipal Councilor in Mumbai and was re-elected in 1997. He won his first term as an MLA from Bandra West in 1999 and held that position until 2014, having been re-elected twice. During this time, he was appointed Chairman of the MHADA Mumbai Board and served as the Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies, Labor, FDA, and Consumer Protection from 2004 to 2008. He also funded the creation of an Eco-Garden in Bandra-Khar in 2011. Death On October 12, 2024, Baba Siddique was shot by three attackers in Mumbai around 9:30 p.m., near his son Zeeshan’s office, who serves as the MLA from Bandra East. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 66 years old. Two suspects were detained: Gurmail Baljit Singh from Haryana and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh. A third suspect, Shiv Kumar from Uttar Pradesh, is still at large. The Mumbai Police have linked this incident to Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently imprisoned.
